The University of California San Diego has put together a very well-organized list of sites offering Social Science data, data catalogs, data libraries, social science gateways, addresses and more. Honestly, this is one of the most helpful web sites available in this area.

BESIS is a compilation on CD-ROM of data and documentation from British general elections, 1964 to 1992. The web page simply provides information about the CD-ROM and the opportunity to order online (U.S. Orders: £53)
Centre for Applied Social Surveys
Home of the Question Bank, which has 3 main aims. The first is to provide a structured store of information about the way in which attributes, circumstances, behaviour and attitudes of households and individuals have beeen measured in major surveys. The second is to encourage appropriate standardisation of measurement procedures in quantitative survey research, with a view to making the acquisition of knowledge about the social world more systematic and cumulative and less plagued by lack of comparibility. The third is to encourage a critical and insightful approach to problems of survey measurement. The Question Bank aims to contain the questionnaires from the main British surveys and commentary on the topics included in these questionnaires.

Danish Data Archives
The Data Archive
The Data Archive at the University of Essex houses the largest collection of accessible computer-readable data in the social sciences and humanities in the United Kingdom. It is a national resource centre, disseminating data throughout the United Kingdom and, by arrangement with other national archives, internationally. There does not appear to be any data available online.

EURODATA Research Archive
Mannheim Centre for European Social Research. The basic function of EURODATA is to support comparative European research at the MZES. The archive covers all of Europe and focuses on socio-economic and political data. There does not appear to be any data available online.
Federal Election Commission: Campaign Data
Downloadable databases containing data about candidates, parties and other committees. Files covering 1995-96 are updated and made available on the 2nd of every month.
The Gallup Organization
Includes information about the Gallup Poll - The world's premier source for public opinion data since 1935. Summaries and marginals online.

Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)
Searchable archive of data collections housed at ICPSR. Searchable study descriptions and codebooks. Data is downloadable for authorized users. Students and faculty involved with the Social Science Data Lab at the University of Colorado should contact jahayes@Colorado.EDU to gain access to these datasets. The latest additions to the archive are available at ICPSR Bulletin - a quarterly publication.
Institute for Research in Social Science: Data Archive
Allows searches by question wording, date, and state to identify questions of interest. The index displays the full question text and marginals for each item retrieved.
Lijphart Elections Archive (SSDC)
A research collection of district level election results for approximately 350 national legislative elections in 26 countries. The catalog of holdings details archive holdings of both print and online data as well as access to data when it can be freely disseminated. Data will not be available online until the summer of 1997.

MIDAS is a national research support service based at the University of Manchester, specialising in on-line provision of strategic research and teaching datasets, software packages, training and large-scale computing resources for the UK academic community.
National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect
The mission of the National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect (NDACAN) is to facilitate the secondary analysis of research data relevant to the study of child abuse and neglect. Data is available for purchase at a fairly reasonable cost.
The American National Election Study
The mission of the National Election Studies (NES) is to produce high quality data on voting, public opinion, and political participation. NES conducts national surveys of the American electorate in presidential and midterm election years, and carries out research and development work through Pilot Studies in odd-numbered years.
American National Election Study - Custom Subsetting & Statistical Capability
This web page allows non-ICPSR members (and members who can't wait for someone official to create a subset for them) to create subsets from the latest NES or the cumulative NES. Data is available in SPSS portable and ASCII formats. Also available are searchable codebooks and the ability to run descriptive statistics online.

Social Indicators of Development
Contains the World Bank's most detailed data collection for assessing human welfare to provide a picture of the social effects of economic development.
Social Science Data Archives - SSDA
From The Australian National University. Set up in 1981 with a brief to collect and preserve computer-readable data relating to social, political and economic affairs and to make the data available for further analysis. SSDA charges include a standard service fee of $60 for each request plus other possible fess based on the type of request.

The Sociometrics Social Science Data Library is a rich source of high-quality health and social science data sets. This web site contains pricing information for the datasets provided in the archive (fairly expensive).

UK Home Office - Research and Statistics Directorate
Tables of data avilable on a variety of topics. Format is similar to what is available in The Statistical Abstract of the United States.
