Recitation
Description for SOCY 1001: Introduction to Sociology
The recitations are intended to focus upon the key concepts that are discussed within the textbook and lectures. The recitations will provide, due to their small size, opportunities to engage in in-depth discussions. There will also be numerous opportunities to ask questions and examine issues that may need further clarification.

Expectations:
Attendance is extremely important. Your Recitation Grade
will account for 1/3rd of your final grade for the course.
If you
miss more than two recitations, the attendance portion of your recitation grade
will be impacted. If there are extraneous circumstances that may/have affected
your recitation attendance (i.e. documented medical illness, death in the
family, car accident, etc.) you will need to contact Shannon Coffey so that the
potential affect on your grade may be mitigated.

Each recitation you will be asked to
write a response to a question or two that will focus upon an aspect of the
assigned reading(s) for the week.
You will receive full credit for turning in your ‘reading
response’ as long as your writing demonstrates that you have a working
knowledge of the assigned readings for the week.
If it is evident from your writing that you have not read the assigned reading
for the week you will not receive credit.
If
you miss more than 2 ‘Reading Responses’ your recitation grade will be
impacted.
Assigned Paper:
You will be asked to submit a paper that will ask you to
apply one of the seminal sociological theories. The assignment will be handed out during recitation.
Your paper will be due during Jackie Raska’s lecture
on October 4th.
Each paper should be 3 to 5 pages in length, and is not to exceed 5 pages. The paper is to be typed in 12 point font and is to be double spaced. You will need to proof-read your paper before turning it in (to check for spelling and grammatical errors). College level writing is expected.
Emailed papers and work left under our
office door will not be accepted.
If you qualify for accommodations through Disability Services, please submit a letter from Disability Services to Jackie Raska within the first two weeks of class so that your needs may be addressed. Also, please let Shannon Coffey know if you qualify for accommodations.
