Description

The purpose of this recitation is to provide an opportunity for students to actively engage in the material discussed in lecture and readings. We will focus primarily on the readings. Therefore, it is imperative that you come to class having read and thought about the material. Most importantly, you should be prepared to talk about it. Recitation sessions also provide an opportunity to clarify questions and to explore themes not covered in the lecture or readings.

All other readings are available through the university’s electronic reserve system. To access these readings go to http://libraries.colorado.edu/screens/coursereserves.html. You will need your Identiky/password. If you have difficulty accessing any of the readings please consult this link first:  http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/circulation/ereserves/faqstudents.htm. If you still have problems, please email me at least TWO days before the assignment is due. You are responsible for all readings.

Assignments and Grades

Your weekly 1-2 page summary and reading response will be due at the beginning of your recitation. Late papers or papers sent over email will not be accepted. You must be in class to turn in your response. Remember to respond to all of the readings and also include 2-3 discussion questions at the end. You are allowed to skip two papers without penalty. If you choose not to skip these papers your two lowest scores will be dropped at the end of the semester.

All papers should follow the same format as explained in the course syllabus:

1. Papers should be typed in 11- or 12-point font, double spaced and have one inch margins.

2. Papers should be proofread. This means you should not only run a spell check and grammar check but also reread for errors.

3. Pages should be numbered and stapled in the left-hand corner.

Papers not following these guidelines will not receive full credit. Responses will be graded on a 10 point scale and posted on WebCT.  Remember, students are expected to not only summarize all of the readings for that week but to actively engage and analyze the material within the context of the course.

Attendance and Participation

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class, so be on time. Being consistently late will impact your participation grade. If you miss class you are responsible for getting notes and assignments from a classmate.

Participation in recitation is crucial. In class discussions, if students do not demonstrate that they have read AND thought about the material, I may end discussion early and students will be expected to independently answer several questions about the reading. These questions will be considered part of your in-class work.

WebCT

There is a WebCT page for this course where you can check your grades, schedule changes and homework assignments. Please check there before emailing Dr. Wilkins or me with questions. You can also use WebCT to post on the student discussion board or to send email to fellow classmates.

Class Expectations

  • Please respect me and your fellow classmates. We will be discussing sensitive and sometimes divisive topics and at times disagreement may arise. I expect students to remain civil and to work together to create an open and comfortable environment for everyone. I will not tolerate any insensitive or offensive remarks or behavior.
  • Please arrive to class on time and prepared. Bring your books as well as your notes from lecture. Also be prepared to turn in your assignments at the beginning of class.
  • You are responsible for all material covered in recitation. If you miss class you are responsible for getting assignments and notes from a classmate.
  • Cell phones must be turned off during the class period, unless I have given you permission to have them in vibrate mode.
  • Please do not pack your things or leave before class had ended.
  • Laptops are not allowed in lecture and they will not be allowed in recitation either, unless you have received permission from Dr. Wilkins.
