SOCIOLOGY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Students interested in doing an internship may consider doing so through the Department of Sociology. Course credit is available to those students who fulfill the requirements of the internship program. The process of applying for the internship program is described below. If you have any questions about the program after reading through all the information listed, please contact the director of the internship program, .
If you wish to participate in the Spring Semester 2012 internship program, applications are due Tuesday, November 1, 2011. (If you miss this deadline, please contact the internship director for specific instructions.)
APPLICATIONS are to be delivered to the Department of Sociology main office at KETCHUM 219.
THE APPLICATION PROCESS
1. Read through the internship course description, prerequisites, and course credit and work hours to make sure you understand the stipulations of the internship program. If you agree with the requirements of this course, proceed to step 2.
- COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Sociology Internship Program provides an academically supervised opportunity for junior and senior sociology majors to work in local organizations that will advance the students’ sociological knowledge and sociological imagination.
- PREREQUISITES: To participate in the Sociology Internship Program, students must have a junior or senior standing, be a declared sociology major, a minimum GPA of 2.0, and have completed Introduction to Sociology (SOCY1001) and one of the following sociological theory courses: Classical Theory (SOCY3001) or Contemporary Theory (SOCY3011).
- INTERNSHIP COURSE CREDIT AND WORK HOURS: Students in the internship program must work a minimum of 40 hours for each hour of academic credit. Typically, Sociology majors in the internship program register for 3 credit hours per semester. This would equal 120 hours of work over the course of the semester. The bulk of that work will be at the internship work site. The remainder of the work hours comprises (1) attending the internship class, (2) meeting one-on-one with the internship director, (3) journaling and conducting academic research and writing, and (4) presenting your final report (during finals week). The course may be repeated for up to 6 total credit hours.
2. Print out and complete the application for the Sociology Internship Program (see below). Once completed, return the application to the Sociology Office (Ketchum 219). Dr. Potter will contact you to let you know whether you have been accepted into the program. Be sure to turn in your application by the above listed due dates.

3. If you have not already done so, choose a location for the internship. See below link for a list of potential locations. If you do not see something that is of interest to you, feel free to contact the organization(s) you have in mind to determine if an internship program is available. Please note that you are responsible for contacting the agency, setting up the internship, and ensuring that the internship director agrees that you have found an appropriate placement. Keep in mind that many organizations require that you complete training before the start of your internship, thus it is important to secure your internship well before the start of the semester. If you have been accepted into the Sociology Internship
Program, download and fill out the Department of Sociology Internship
Program Contract. The contract requires a signature from your
internship location supervisor.
The completed application is due to
Dr. Potter on the first internship class meeting. No exceptions.

The Spring 2012 class will meet biweekly on Tuesdays, 5:00pm-6:30pm. Specific class dates and the course syllabus will be provided at the start of the semester, but students are encouraged to contact Dr. Potter with any questions.
