Sociology Undergraduate Awards
The Helen and Val Fischer Award is for outstanding scholarship only. This award is awarded to the nominated student who has the best record of scholarly work, however we define it. It could be through classwork, through an honors thesis, through other outstanding research, or through any other strictly academic venue. This award has no connection whatsoever to community service.
The Jim Downton Award goes to the student with the most outstanding record of combined service to the community and academics. Usually we tend to weigh the service part a little more highly, but that is up to our esteemed Awards committee. Letters nominating students for this award should speak to both of these issues.
Jen Hlavacek Award on Religion and Society
This award will give $1,000 to the undergraduate student at the University of Colorado-Boulder who submits the best paper on a topic relating to how religious activities and beliefs (in a broad sense) affect and are affected by larger society.
The papers can come from honors theses, class assignments, or independent study projects but should contribute knowledge to the student’s field of study. The goal of the award is to foster the interest and understanding of undergraduate students in the topic of religion and society.
Undergraduate students from all disciplines are eligible for the award, but papers co-authored with faculty are not eligible.
The papers should be submitted to Fred Pampel (Sociology Department, 327 UCB) by April 1, 2011. The winner will be selected by a committee of three faculty members from three departments.
