Global
Development (PSCI 4012)
What is the
meaning of “development”? Why have some countries and
regions of the developed world been more successful in
their efforts to promote development than others? This
class addresses the issues of global development in a
number of ways. First, what do we know about the causes and
consequences of world poverty and inequality and the
processes associated with development? Second, what role
can – and do – governments play in development. And third,
what role do international actors have in alleviating
poverty. After laying this groundwork, we will move on to
consider other important themes in development, including
urban-rural issues, health and education, women and
poverty, the role of civil society, and globalization and
trade.
